Christian unity does not mean that we have to give up the traditions and convictions that shape our own churches. But it does mean learning to recognize what is essential to the Christian faith, what is important to our particular tradition, and what can unite us with believers who worship and serve differently than we do. Jesus prayed that his followers would be one, and Paul calls us to make every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit. In a world marked by division, a spirit of unity among Christians can become a visible expression of the reconciling gospel we proclaim. This sermon explores how we can remain faithful to our own church while learning from, cooperating with, and blessing Christians from other traditions.
